I read an article the other day on Medium titled, “What Your Therapist Knows But Won’t Tell You: Confessions From Inside the Therapy Room.”
After 15 years as a psychologist, here are the truths we’re trained not to say out loud. A client sat in my office last Tuesday, crying about how broken she was, how everyone else seemed to have life figured out while she was falling apart. She apologized for crying. Again. Then she apologized for apologizing.
I wanted to tell her something I’m not supposed to say: “I literally had a panic attack in my car before our session because I’m worried about my own kid’s mental health and feel like I’m failing as a parent despite having a PhD in psychology.”
Here’s what I know after almost 20 years of going to traditional therapy: they have knowledge to share but they do not have the capacity to heal a person. Only God can do that.
