Do You Love Neighbor?

There are certain truths built into the fabric of the world. In Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis begins his book by exploring the “law of human nature.” He shared “right and wrong as a clue to the meaning of the universe.”

We all like to think we’re “good,” but doesn’t good need to be defined? I like to believe what the bible tells me about this.

A rich man comes to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”

Jesus’ reply is staggering to most good deed doers.

“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good.

That should truly put our hearts and mind at ease, right? But why do we not like being “good.”

Jesus continued, “If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”

“Which ones?” he inquired.

Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother, and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”

The young man had done these all but when Jesus asked him to “go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

This story is in Matthew 19.

We all fall short but it certainly gives us an example of how to live. I’m not rich so I don’t need to worry about giving away all that I have but do I love my neighbor as myself?

I certainly try to.

Paul said it best, “Remember those in prison, as if you were there yourself. Remember also those being mistreated, as if you felt their pain in your own bodies.” Hebrews 13:3.

So, the next time your hear a story about childhood trauma, stop and listen. You may just be loving your neighbor as yourself.
