Instead of avoiding your triggers, face them directly. Understand what they reveal about you.
Cultivate curiosity.
Dive deeper.
Navigating the world like an exposed wound means everything will seem threatening.
So, what exactly is an emotional trigger?
A trigger is anything that elicits a strong emotional reaction. It might be a comment, an event, or an article. It could be a smell, sound, or thought that reminds you of a past experience. It might even be seeing someone you dislike or hearing something you strongly disagree with.
True emotional healing involves feeling deeply—sometimes feeling uncomfortable, emotional, or painful things. By addressing the parts of ourselves trapped in the past, we can bring them into the present. Each time we do this, we become less fragmented and more whole.
Avoidance only keeps the pain alive. Sometimes, the best way to overcome what hurts you is to confront it and become accustomed to it, rather than hide from it.
Taking responsibility for your emotions, reactions, and actions is crucial for being a healthy, well-adjusted adult. This has been an instrumental part of my healing journey.
But there’s more. Beyond just facing our triggers, it’s essential to reflect on our responses. Ask yourself why a particular event or comment provoked such a strong reaction. What unresolved issue does it highlight? What past experience does it echo? Understanding these connections can provide profound insights into your emotional landscape.
Additionally, practice self-compassion. Healing is not a linear process. Some days, you will feel strong and capable, while others, you might feel vulnerable and overwhelmed. Accept this as part of your journey.
Building resilience is also key. Engage in practices that strengthen your emotional well-being, such as mindfulness, meditation, or expressive writing. These activities can provide a safe space to explore your feelings and build emotional strength.
Remember, healing is an ongoing journey. Each step you take towards understanding and embracing your triggers is a step towards becoming a more whole, resilient, and empowered individual.
