The heart is a wild thing. It runs after pleasures, it bows before honors, it clings to security, yet never is it at peace. I have seen souls chase endlessly after one comfort, then another, like a child distracted by every trinket. Yet the heart remains hungry and unsatisfied, for it was not made for these small consolations.
From my own life I know this restlessness well. I sought the approval of others; I busied myself with distractions; I even tried to pray while keeping one hand upon the world. But the heart cannot be divided forever. It will either exhaust itself in pursuit of vanities or surrender to the One who alone can quiet its hunger.
Why does the Lord permit such restlessness? Because without it we would settle too cheaply. We would think ourselves content with fleeting pleasures and forget that eternity is written into our souls. The disquiet is His mercy. It unsettles us until we seek Him.
When at last the heart turns fully to God, the change is not always sudden. The noise of the world still beckons. Old desires still return. But gradually, as prayer deepens and self-love diminishes, the heart begins to rest. Not in a void, but in the living presence of Christ. His companionship stills the wandering, His love anchors the drifting.
So if your heart is restless, do not despair. It is the sign that you are alive, that you are not made for the dust but for the Divine. Do not silence the hunger with distractions. Let it lead you instead to the feast for which you were created.
For the truth is this: the human heart will never rest until it rests in God. And when it does, even the smallest moment—a prayer, a kindness, a breath- becomes charged with eternity.
